HILLSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE (HCC) ELECTRICAL LINE WORKER TRAINING PROGRAM INFORMATION

The TECO Tampa Electric Scholarship Opportunity

The Hillsborough Community College Electrical Line Worker Training Program is a scholarship-based program designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and basic skills needed when seeking a career in the electric utility industry as an Apprentice Line Worker.  Our 4-month training program prepares scholarship recipients to apply for the TECO Apprentice Line Worker position (during TECO’s posting window).  Hourly wages start at $26.98 and in time, can increase to $50.00 per hour or more. 

  • HCC cannot guarantee employment.
  • HCC does not determine the hiring schedule or hiring processes of TECO or other employers.

SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS:  

  1. Review Program Information (See above)
  2. Complete application (See below)
  3. Only submit 1 application 
  4. Receive approval from HCC-ICCE staff to attend Discovery Bootcamp (pre-program orientation)
  5. Receive a link to register for the Bootcamp fee; $93.00
  6. Attend the Bootcamp Program: Saturday, February 22, 2025
  7. Bootcamp Location: HCC Brandon Campus
  8. The top scoring 26 students plus 8 alternates who pass the bootcamp will then be required to pass the below eligibility requirements; if applicable
  9. Pass the BSTB Battery Standard Aptitude Test
  10. Pass a Level 2 background check
  11. Pass a drug test – Students must pass the drug screen, if you fail the required drug screen you will not be eligible for the scholarship due to the requirements of the related employment opportunity.  This eligibility requirement includes but is not limited to recreational drugs, including medical marijuana.

If all requirements are met, 26 students will receive a TECO Scholarship Award totaling $6,500.00, the full cost of the program via email with a link to register for the Electrical Line Worker Program. If all the requirements are not met, please refer to #6 under FAQ’s.


Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):

  1. This scholarship opportunity is intended exclusively for your program fee and program-related expenses; you are responsible for personal expenses. Attendance is required for all program dates and times. 
  2. All communication is via email; check your spam and inbox for emails from HCC-ICCE regarding the Electrical Line Worker Program. Allow 2 to 3 business days for applicable replies/notifications.
  3. Only one scholarship per individual.
  4. You cannot pay out of pocket.
  5. The Bootcamp will take place outside in the elements and you will be expected to perform physical tasks/activities. Endurance and stamina are important. Bootcamp tasks may be as follows; but not limited to strenuous: Lifting, digging, climbing, and walking.
  6. You will receive a refund for the Bootcamp registration fee if: You do not want to attend the Bootcamp. You do not pass the Bootcamp. You do not pass the BSTB Test.

  8. A CDL (Commercial Driver License) is not required.

  10. What does alternate mean? An alternate is an individual that did not score in the top 26 at the bootcamp but was selected to go through the process should one of the top 26 not be able to move forward in the process.   You will be notified that they are an alternate and will be required to fulfill all the eligibility requirements.  Alternates will only be eligible for the scholarship if the top 26 do not meet the eligibility requirements.  If you do not want to move forward as an alternate, please refer to #7 under FAQ’s.
