Medical Assistant (CMA)
Care Technician (PCT)
Enter into the world of healthcare today by performing patient care in outpatient/private medical offices. Master skills of a medical assistant by learning methods of preparing patients for examination and treatment, running electrocardiographs (EKGs), and performing routine laboratory procedures including phlebotomy (blood draw). Gain hands-on experience with critical procedures and concepts in collecting patient history and vital signs, phlebotomy, EKG, pharmacology, medical records, professional workplace behavior, ethics, and the legal aspects of healthcare. You will also complete an introduction to medical terminology, healthcare etiquette, and healthcare customer service to stand apart from others in a competitive job market. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, and EKG/Telemetry Technician certification exams through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) receiving up to three certifications!
Students must be over 18 with a high school diploma or GED to participate.
Course Structure:
To meet the community healthcare workforce needs of the Tampa Bay area, we have created a curriculum to maximize the ability to “stack” healthcare certifications, making students highly desirable by employers.
The Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) program is made up of three primary training areas and meets the requirements for up to three certifications in Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, and EKG through the National Healthcareer Association at www.nhanow.com. Additional Phlebotomy and EKG fees are paid separately.
- HCC offers the Clinical Medical Assistant course several times throughout the year.
- The 220+ hour course includes over 216 hours of combined classroom lectures, online self-study, and simulation lab.
- Optional 100 hours of clinical experience (Additional $200).
Upon completing the course, HCC will place you at a medical clinic to receive 100 hours of clinical experience. You will be assigned to a clinical site that is flexible with your schedule. It is recommended that you are available 16 to 40 hours per week. Clinicals are typically held at outpatient medical centers or private practices. You must have a flexible schedule and access to transportation. Many students are able to find employment during the course without Clinical Experience!
Clinical sites require the following to attend clinicals including:
- Medical Physical (Health and Immunizations Certification)
- TB Test
- Complete Immunization Record and/or Titers Results
- Flu Shot (during the flu season)
- Background Check
- Drug Screen
- COVID-19 Vaccine may be required depending on the clinical site (A Medical or Religious exemption is acceptable)

Patient Care Technicians (PCT) work alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to oversee and monitor patients. The Patient Care Technician combo course teaches the technical skills necessary to service complex patient personal care issues including rehabilitation services, basic bedside care, dialysis, collection of laboratory specimens including phlebotomy (blood draws), and running EKGs in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the PCT, Phlebotomy, and EKG/Telemetry Technician exams through National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and apply to the Board of Nursing to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Many hospitals may require that PCTs have a CNA license for employment. Visit the Florida Board of Nursing website for information about becoming a CNA.
You could end up receiving a total of four certifications! Additional Phlebotomy, EKG, and CNA exam fees are paid separately.

PCT/CNA Training
Description: The 124-hour PCT/CNA portion of the PCT program provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform basic care services for a patient (acute care setting), resident (long-term care setting), or an individual in a home health setting. It prepares the student to function in the role of nursing assistant under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). The course includes 84 hours of lecture and skills training with the option to attend 40 hours of clinical experience in a hospital or nursing home ($200 separate fee). Completers will be able to challenge the CNA licensing exam in the state of Florida and work as a Home Health Aide in any Medicare-approved center.
EKG Technician Training
Description: This 40-hour course provides training for administering and reading EKGs. The course includes anatomy and physiology and disease processes that affect the heart, medications, Holter monitoring, 12-lead EKG, analyzing EKG readings, and much more.
Phlebotomy Training
Description: The 84-hour phlebotomy training portion of the PCT program is designed to provide didactic and skills training in venipuncture and lab specimen collection. Didactic lectures cover the theory, anatomy, and terminology pertaining to the cardiovascular system. Clinical lab instruction provides hands-on training in venipuncture techniques and lab specimen collections following procedures verified using a skills check-off system.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have performed at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on a live person to qualify for the National Healthcareer Association’s national certification exam as a Phlebotomy Technician.
Optional Clinical Experience ($200):
HCC will place your class at a hospital to receive 100 hours of CNA clinical experience. Many students are able to find employment during the course without Clinical Experience!

Certified EKG/Telemetry Technician (CET) administers and reads EKGs in various healthcare settings. The course includes anatomy and physiology and disease processes that affect the heart, medications, Holter monitoring, 12-lead EKG, analyzing EKG readings, and much more. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the national EKG/Telemetry technician certification exams through National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Students must be over 18 with a high school diploma or GED to participate.
Course Structure:
HCC offers the EKG/Telemetry Technician course several times throughout the year. The course is over 44 hours of in-class lectures, EKG skills practice, and online training. It includes a mandatory performance of running at least 10 live, EKG tests on a live person, and recognition of EKG rhythms.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Perform EKG tests on a live person.
- Describe the normal cardiac anatomy and physiology and normal electrical conduction through the heart.
- Identify and relate waveforms to the cardiac cycle.
- Utilize a systematic process when approaching the interpretation of the EKG.
- Identify normal and abnormal components on the EKG including specific cardiac dysrhythmias.
- Recognize sinus and ventricular dysrhythmias on EKG and relate cause, significance, symptoms, and treatment.
- Describe the appropriate nursing interventions for specific dysrhythmias.
Clinical Experience Requirements:
There are no clinical experience requirements with this course.

Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) works at hospitals, medical clinics, and labs performing blood draws and collecting/processing lab specimens. The Phlebotomy Technician course provides the hands-on experience and skills needed to perform these tasks through didactic hours, hands-on skills, and simulation training. Upon completing the course, students will be eligible to take the Phlebotomy Technician national exam through National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Students must be over 18 with a high school diploma or GED to participate.
Course Structure:
HCC offers the Phlebotomy Technician course several times throughout the year. The course is over 90 hours of in-class lectures, online training, and skills practice. To qualify for the national certification exam, you will complete 30 venipuncture sticks and 10 capillary sticks during the course.
Clinical Experience Requirements:
This course does not have clinical training hours. All 30 venipuncture sticks and 10 capillary sticks are completed in the lab.

Become a licensed massage therapist in less than 9 months! HCC ICCE’s new 500-hour massage therapy program is approved by the Florida Board of Massage and meets all the training requirements to become a licensed massage therapist. The program also includes three days of MBLEX exam preparation!
Courses will be held at HCC Brandon Campus, 10451 Nancy Watkins Dr, Tampa, FL 33619.
Students must complete a Level 2 background check ($55) before the first class meeting. Those with felonies may not be accepted. This information will be provided to you after you register for the program or block.
Vaccines (MMR, Varicella, Hep B, TDAP, COVID-19, Flu) are highly recommended for all massage therapy students for the safety of the students and patrons.
Once a student completes all 500 hours, HCC submits this information to the Florida Board of Massage. Students will need to apply for licensure to the Florida Board of Massage ($155) and complete an additional background check for the State of Florida ($85).
